Mokoena came to Europe through Bayern Leverkusen, and was quickly picked up by Ajax to replace the retiring Danny Blind.
He spent two years there, not necessarily playing at the level Ajax was expecting and loaned him to GBA in Belgium. Three years on loan, he was finally sold to RC Genk, also in Belgium, where he has displayed good football, which prompted in 2004 interest from Blackburn, with whom he signed in January 2005.
Mokoena was the youngest-ever player to win a cap for South Africa at 18 years, two months and 26 days when he debuted against Botswana in the 1999 Cosafa Castle Cup.
